Talk about a kitchen with the WOW factor

Before you start your demolition or decide your design plans, it is important to make sure your new kitchen (dream kitchen) includes some or all these popular trends — all of which have a purpose.

Kitchen Design and Layout

The design and layout of your kitchen is the most important element. While you may want a cool and inviting appeal to it, your kitchen is, for all intents and purposes, a work area. Functionality is paramount when designing how it should flow and what you want in it. For example, you may want a huge island but if your space is limited, you must think carefully about how that may impede your ability to work in the kitchen. On the other hand, you may need lots of cabinet space and storage especially if you love to cook.

Cabinetry

From the colors to the style to the purpose, the cabinets are a quintessential part of the kitchen (next to the counter tops of course). Today’s kitchen design trends feature a simple look with clean lines and lots of function. Storage is always a hot button in kitchens which is why today’s cabinet designs incorporate tons of practicality. Gone are the days of a fake cabinet door or drawer facing to add balance. Cabinet companies have developed the “if you build it, they will come” mentality. Think about having a spice rack that pulls out vertically, so you can see ALL your spices lined up or having long drawer just below the sink in which you place (or hide) sponges and rags so they aren’t sitting on the corner of the counter tops.

Smart Kitchens

By now, you have seen the commercials with the smart refrigerators with a monitor on the door for your grocery list. It comes with an app on your cell phone to upload the list while at the grocery.  High end smart kitchens include faucets that have sensors to turn on and off with movement under it; lighting that brightens and dims based on movement in the kitchen; refrigerators that tell you which eggs should be eaten first; and, the list goes on.

Sink and counter tops — a combination of style and function

Sink and Counter Tops

The sink and counter tops are also very important to the look and function of the kitchen. Counter tops need to be hygienic and durable yet good looking. Quartz has quickly become a favorite as it has the look of granite but is much more durable. The size of the sink depends on the size of the kitchen. A smaller kitchen may not have enough room for a nice, double sink especially if you need counter space. As for the faucets, they also need to be functional and sleek. Stainless steel is very durable and looks so stylish; however, when selecting stainless steel, make sure it contains a high percentage of chromium and steel (even more durable).

Lighting

Today’s kitchen design trends also focus on lighting. It is important to have exceptional lighting – after all, you need to see what you’re doing when working in the kitchen while at the same time create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Pendulum lighting as well as under cabinet LED lighting provide excellent options for brightening up work space while adjustable recessed lights and track lighting are good for ambiance.

Maintenance

No matter the size or design of your kitchen, make sure the maintenance is minimal. If you plan to design the kitchen of your dreams, make sure it is easy to maintain a clean kitchen. You want to be able to wipe up messes and smudges with the greatest of ease.

No matter what you do with your kitchen, remember it’s YOUR kitchen. Have fun looking at kitchen design trends to decide what you want. Make it work for you.
